EMOTIONAL EATING

Feeding our feelings is a major no-no! Emotional eating is the practice of consuming large quantities of food. This food is usually comfort or junk foods, and it’s eaten in response to feelings instead of hunger. Most experts estimate that 75% of overeating is caused by emotions. Many of us use food as a crutch to bring us comfort, at least momentarily that is. We often turn to food to soothe our emotional problems, and this is bad for a couple of reasons. One, it leads to unwanted weight gain, and in some cases health issues. Two, it’s a habit that prevents us from learning the necessary skills to effectively overcome our emotional distress. It’s a vicious cycle that starts out by a triggering event or situation. This trigger or situation causes you to experience uncomfortable emotions and thoughts such as negative feelings, stress, or lack of control. By recognizing what triggers our emotional eating, we can substitute more suitable methods to manage our emotional problems and take food, weight gain and health concerns out of the equation. There are a lot of emotional triggers that cause this type of eating, stress, anger, boredom, anxiety, loneliness, poor self-esteem, and relationship problems are just some of the more common ones.

However, realize that there are other situations besides emotions that trigger this type of splurging with food. Sometimes it’s a social setting that can trigger you to eat. Many times we find ourselves encouraged to eat by others when we’re out at a social event, or we feel obligated to eat when others are indulging. Likewise, some of us eat to fit in, while some do because they feel inadequate around others. The next time you’re out with friends take the lead and order something healthy, it might surprise you who will follow suit. Make your decision with confidence, that air shines through and many times causes others to take notice and do the same.

Then sometimes we eat because the opportunity is right in front of us. All of a sudden we’re in this specific situation, such
